I munched on a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and watched

The Warlords (投名状; tóumíngzhuàng).

It’s 1870 and China is in the grip of a bloody and brutal civil war. Three men become blood brothers and join the Qing army to help their village survive or otherwise face starvation. The fighting is long and hard, and politics is the puppet master pulling the strings in the background. In the end, the alliance falls apart as the three follow their own paths which lead to their mutual destruction – just as the mandarins planned.

A typical Chinese historical epic.
