The etymology of a nickname.

For the past couple of days, we’ve being doing a unit called Auntie’s News, which takes the BBC as its theme. I explained to the classes that Auntie is a nickname for the BBC. At the end of class this afternoon, Harry, who’s one of the brighter kids in Class 6, asked me about the origin of the nickname. He thought it might be because BBC was jokingly considered to mean “Big Bust/Breast Corporation”, hence “Auntie”. And you weren’t thinking about breasts for any other reason, Harry?

Mind you, if you’re inclined to believe the Beeb is run by a bunch of tits, then perhaps he wasn’t so far wrong.
